Pushing Back the Darkness

General Council 2011 Challenge

Introduction:  Thank you for sending me to the General Council of the C&MA in Kansas City .  The theme was ‘Pushing Back the Darkness’ and the featured speaker was Dr. Ravi Zacharias.  Rev. Zacharias challenged us to push back the darkness in four areas of our lives; personal, community, nation and world.

I.              Pushing Back the Darkness begins in “me

a.   Psalm 101 – Declaration of holy living.

b.   Council quotes…

--(Rev. Fred Hartley III) “In order to push back the darkness we must be personally right with God.”

--(Dr. Ravi Zacharias) “We will never teach people to worship in community unless we      teach them to worship personally.  Worship builds a conviction of safety. It satisfies us with the power to change. It rescues us from the tyranny of the immediate.

--(C&MA Missionary JJ Knouch) “Missions exists because worship doesn’t”

*** Serve Communion ***

II.           Pushing Back the Darkness in my community.

a.   Acts 1:8 – God expects transformation of entire cities.

b.   I Peter 3: 10-17 “Be ready…”

c.    Rev. Ravi Zacharias Council quotes…

                1. “Apologetics must not merely be heard but seen.

2.   If gospel is not seen it will not be heard.

3.   If you answer questions without answering questioner you are a bad apologist.

4.   We will never push back the darkness with an argument; we must meet a felt need first.

5.   Truth and relevance are indispensible to communication.

III.        Pushing Back the Darkness in my nation and world.

a.   Light is necessary to push back the darkness. John 1:4-13

--(CMA missionary JJ Knouch) Sharing through tears she said that their were more people worshipping God in this auditorium KC (Convention Center with less than 2000 people ) than that of the entire country where her family is going in central Asia . 1/100% are believers.

b. Light of Jesus is the solution but the lantern needs to be carried.

--(CMA Core Values DVD Clip – Syna Lao)

c. (A.B. Simpson portrayal) “Co-lantern with God and push back the darkness.”

Conclusion:

1.   Live sanctified and worship daily our God.

2.   Live Christ in order to share Christ.

3.   Live Christ’s Great Commission
